New Mexico: Virgin Galactic or known as British spaceflight company within the Virgin Group, has just opened its first commercial space terminal. The 670,000 square-feet facility located on 18,000 acres of State Trust Land in New Mexico, and will be the departure site for all future astronauts that sign up for Virgin Galactic’s spaceflight services.
Gateway to Space is designed by Foster + Partners which is a two-story structure that first floor is named Gaia lounge (representing departure and return) that features furniture and fittings that promote human interaction — meant to connect the passengers as they board on their historic journeys. Cirrus, the second floor (representing light, air and flight), is where the operations happen.
The whole facility is equipped with modish technology, highly energy-efficient and promotes sustainability. Gateway to Space is expected to be fully operational with Virgin’s Galactic’s initial launch in 2020.
