1. VILLAGERS CLAIM NEVER EMPOWER INDIVIDUALS OR NGOS TO REPRESENT THEM
Villagers from Kampung Long Terawan and Kampung Melinau Mulu have never empowered any individuals or non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to represent the Berawan community.
Councillor Garry Hassim Wan said, it has been unanimously agreed among the villagers that the village leaders will represent them in discussions with any party including the government.
According to Garry, the villagers want the police and Immigration Department to investigate the alleged report made by Willie Kajan who held a campaign overseas to stop the planting of oil palm by Radiant Lagoon Sdn Bhd at Kampung Long Terawan as this had smeared the state and the villagers of Long Terawan and Sungai Melinau.
He added, based on the report from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Miri, the claim that the water catchment area is contaminated is also untrue as the area is not located within the PL (provisional licence) area owned by Radiant Lagoon.
Therefore, the claims that Willie Kajan and Ukau Lupong propagated through the Bruno Manser Fund website under ‘Payment of suspected bribes to Berawan/Tering leaders’ has been rejected and police reports have been made due to adverse effects it has posed to the public’s perception of the village leaders and the Sarawak government.
Garry hoped that firm action will be taken by the relevant government agencies against the group that deliberately incites villagers to prevent development in the PL area of Radiant Lagoon.
2. INSTALLATION OF TELCO TOWER TEMPORARILY HALTED
The installation of a telecommunication tower at Taman Delight Lorong 8, near Miri airport was temporarily halted yesterday upon requests from residents.
Piasau assemblyman Datuk Sebastian Ting said, there is a move to communicate with the contractor to stop the installation as the residents had expressed worry over the possible effects the tower could have on them in terms of health.
According to Ting, the project approved by Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) is aimed to improve the communication coverage in the area.
Besides, the over-half-acre land on which the tower is to be built on had been approved for the construction of a mini recreation park for the benefit of residents.
Ting, who was surprised with the complaints received, suggested that the telecommunication company look for a more suitable location away from the residential area, to erect the tower.
