1. TEACHING MATH AND SCIENCE IN ENGLISH WILL BE SUCCESSFUL
Sarawak will make full use of the opportunity given to implement the use of English to teach of Mathematics and Science in primary schools next year to produce a new generation of Sarawakians who are highly proficient in the English language.
Education, Science and Technological Research Minister Dato Sri Michael Manyin Jawong said this programme, if successfully implemented, would make students more confident to communicate in English and this would make them more marketable and competitive in the global arena.
He said this when speaking at the Serembu Pre-Gawai Festival at Siniawan community hall last night.
In appealing to parents to give their full support to this programme, Manyin said the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research (MESTR) was now holding several meetings with Sarawak Education Department (JPNS) to plan and strategies for the effectiveness of this programme.
Sarawak had agreed to be the first state to implement the teaching of Mathematics and Science in English for primary schools effective Jan 1 next year, after the opportunity was offered during a meeting on April 24 between Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg and federal Education Minister Dr Maszlee Malik.
2. NEW SEBUYAU MOSQUE ‘GIFT’ FOR N.27 SEBUYAU FOLKS
The newly built New Sebuyau Mosque is a special gift to the people in the Sebuyau area in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri this year.
Sebuyau State Assemblyman, Datuk Julahi Narawi, said the long wait of the residents in the area to have a new mosque was finally rewarded with the completion of the New Sebuyau Mosque project.
He added the new mosque can accommodate nearly 2,000 worshippers at any one time.
He said this in his speech at the New Sebuyau Mosque Thanksgiving Ceremony, Breaking of Fast and Baitumal Donation Presentation Ceremony for Mosques and Suraus in N. 27 Sebuyau Area at New Sebuyau Mosque.
As a new landmark in Sebuyau, Datuk Julaihi hopes that various religious activities will be held at the New Sebuyau Mosque.
At the same event, Datuk Julaihi also presented donations in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration to 100 recipients consisting of senior citizens, single mothers and disabled people from N.27 Sebuyau area.
