KUCHING: Petros is now the single entity to supply, sell and deliver domestic gas to Sarawak homes, businesses and industries.
This is according to Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg, represented by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Tengah Awang Ali Hasan as he witnessed the Sarawak Domestic Gas Signing Ceremony between Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) and Petroleum Sarawak (Petros) at Hilton Hotel, today.
“This means effective from 1 January 2020, Sarawak has full control and authority over the supply, sales, and distribution of natural gas within the State, realising the full intent of the State’s Distribution of Gas Ordinance 2016.”
“Natural Gas is the Crown Jewel of our Petroleum resources where Sarawak holds 54% of the total national gas reserves, while Sarawak also holds 29% of the total national reserves,” Abang Zohari said in his keynote that was read by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan.
He highlighted that Sarawak now can leverage on gas resources to accelerate the state’s economic development through more downstream petrochemical activities, putting Sarawak in a strong position to enhance the attractiveness of the State as a Preferred Investment Destination and to surpass economic development towards a high income by 2030.
“With this latest development, Sarawak can now attract more investments in oil and gas downstream industries by making available more gas to be used as feedstock, as well as other high value industries where gas is required for processing.”
