1. NORA QUOIRIN: MALAYSIA STEPS UP SEARCH EFFORT
Malaysian authorities combed the trails of Berembun Mountain on Monday as the search continued for a 15-year-old London schoolgirl, Nora Anne Quoirin.
The girl disappeared from the Dusun eco-resort in southern Negeri Sembilan state on 4 August in a case that has baffled police and turned up no evidence so far.
Almost 350 people continued the search efforts Monday despite the major Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha.
2. HK DISPUTE: CLASHES AND ARRESTS CONTINUED
Arrests and clashes continued in Hong Kong as protesters occupied roads in another weekend of anti-government demonstrations.
Footage shows what appears to be injured and bloody demonstrators being tackled and handcuffed by authorities on a street in the Causeway Bay area.
Some of the people apprehending and using force against the protesters were themselves dressed in the signature outfit of demonstrators – fueling speculation that police officers pretended to be protesters.
3. SOUTH ASIA MONSOON: DEATH TOLL RISES AS FLOOD HIT KERALA
At least 93 people have been killed and more than 400,000 displaced in floods and mudslides after torrential rains battered southern India.
In the worst-hit state of Kerala, at least 57 people died, according to a state official.
South Asia has continued to face rain-related disasters during the current monsoon season, with 160 people killed last month in northeastern India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
4. SOUTH ASIA MONSOON: FLOODING LEAVES HOMES SUBMERGED IN MYANMAR’
People in Myanmar took refuge on their roofs on Sunday as water rushed through the ground level of their homes amid weekend flooding in Mon state’s Ye township.
Many villagers were evacuated to a relief camp to escape the floods following torrential rains.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs said that monsoon flooding had displaced more than 7,000 people last week in Mon state.
According to the U.N nearly 12,000 people were displaced in Myanmar last week alone, bringing the total number of those in evacuation centers to more than 38,000.
