1. EIGHT KILLED AS MIGRANT BOAT SINKS OFF WESTERN TURKEY
ANKARA: Eight people were killed on Monday after a dinghy carrying migrants sank off the coast of the Bodrum district in the Mugla province.
The state-run Anadolu news agency said, the coast guard has launched search and rescue operations to reach the passengers of the boat and managed to rescue 31 migrants.
It said, the operations, carried out with two boats, a diving team and a helicopter from the coast guard, had found the bodies of eight people from the boat, which carried 40 migrants in total.
In an earlier statement, the coast guard had said efforts were underway to reach nine missing migrants from the dinghy.
2. INDIAN DOCTORS STRIKE OVER VIOLENCE FROM PATIENTS AND FAMILIES
NEW DELHI: Tens of thousands of Indian doctors went on strike on Monday calling for more protection against violence by patients and their families.
The nationwide strike, which will last until Tuesday morning, is in solidarity with doctors in the eastern state of West Bengal after three were viciously attacked by the relatives of a man who died.
The family, who blamed the death on negligence by the doctors, lashed out violently and left two of the medical staff critically injured.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA), representing 350,000 of India’s 900,000 doctors, called for tougher punishments for those assaulting medical staff, requested for more security cameras in the hospitals and restricted the visitors’ entrance.
3. A DOZEN KILLED IN INDONESIA BUS CRASH AFTER PASSENGER ARGUMENT
JAKARTA: Twelve people were killed and dozens more injured in an Indonesian traffic accident after a bus passenger tried to wrest control of the steering wheel following an argument with the driver.
The accident happened at around 1am today when the coach swerved into oncoming traffic on a toll road in West Java, smashing into two cars and causing a truck to roll.
According to Atik Suswanti, the head of the Majalengka police traffic unit, a passenger attempted to forcibly take control of the steering wheel before the bus went out of control.
Police said, some 43 people were injured in the multi-vehicle accident and were rushed to hospital.
