KUCHING: The state government is committed to ensuring the statewide palm oil industry is fully certified under Malaysian Sustainable Palm Oil MSPO Certification by December 2019.
Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari Tun Abang Haji Openg said, in today’s global economy, businesses and NGOs are demanding a more sustainable production of agricultural products, including palm oil.
With that, he explained, the state government have issued a moratorium on clearing of forest for large scale oil palm plantation except on NCR lands to stop further destructing the forest.
He added, the state government have also pledged to commit 80 percent of its land mass as primary and secondary forests which include industrial forest for planting of tress for raw materials for the timber industry.
He said this in his remarks during the 50th Sarawak oil palms berhad anniversary gala dinner here.
Apart from that, he disclosed, the problem of labor shortages faced by the palm oil industry in Sarawak will be addressed innovatively with the utilization of ICT that will enable the industry to gain competitive edge and further enhances the development of the industry locally while adding value to the whole industry.
