First, there are laws in place to keep us safe. Second, there are signs everywhere telling us what not to do—loiter, skateboard, eat, smoke, etc. But what about the less obvious ways that towns influence our daily lives? Well, suburbs were designed so that we would buy cars and drive around everywhere. Lights are being used to fight the opioid crisis in Pennsylvania, and also to prevent terrible accidents from happening in Tokyo’s subway system. And trash cans are getting facelifts to make recycling more fun! But unfortunately, many towns and cities are also doing things that make public spaces more uncomfortable. Why would they do that?
