To encourage more rural community participation in the tourism industry through Community Based Ecotourism (CBET), six additional new homestays were registered this year.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Haji Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah disclosed this during his winding up speech at Sarawak State Legislative Assembly this morning.

They are; Homestay Rumah Penghuku Philip Kayak, Sungai Durin Sibu, Homestay Lobang Batu in Serian, Homestay Singai in Bau, Homestay Mulu in Miri, Homestay Long Banga in Ulu Baram, Miri and Rumah Margherita in Julau.

As for now, there are 41 registered homestays with 582 operators throughout Sarawak.

He further explained that CBET focuses on community activities whilst stressing on the preservation of the environment and natural resources and highlights local cultural practices and the same time providing job opportunities and alternative source of income.
